Daryl Byrne…

is a photographer, conservationist and urban farmer who, for three decades, has been creating projects and spaces that connect food, community and ecological restoration, from the heart of Marrickville to the remote wilderness of Papua New Guinea.

In 2003 he spent five months in a kayak paddling from Australia to Papua New Guinea, where he fell in love with untouched remote wilderness and the traditional custodians living on country there. That journey set his direction for every decision that followed.

Owner and founder of Field & Fin, a conservation-led urban farm, fire kitchen and members space in Marrickville, he has created a space where the produce, events and a growing community helps fund and supports his conservation work in Papua New Guinea.

Working with local traditional partners on country, the self managed marine sanctuaries now cover over 4,000 acres of tropical islands, reefs and lagoon ecosystems. Education and training programs, constant monitoring and recording of ecosystem health, helps protect a number of turtle species and their breeding grounds, migratory bird nesting sites, local dugong populations, corals, clams and other wildlife species.

Always with a camera in hand, underwater or in the air, Byrne’s photography documents all of it.

Byrne is a man who creates things.

Stone houses, ecolodges, aquaponics systems, regenerative growing systems, mushroom farms, fire ovens and food gardens.
He is a Master Scuba Diver, a fire cook, a boat captain, adventurer and an educator who believes in sharing knowledge across cultures, teaching and learning at every opportunity.
